The humble cardigan has made a fashionable comeback. With knitwear season now in full force, the cardigan is taking centre stage for autumn/winter, revelling in its time in the spotlight. What once was an item of clothing designated for your grandmas and aunties is now a style hero. Thanks to catwalk shows from Gucci to APC, the cosiest of all trends is now offering us limitless styling possibilities.
Browse any of your favourite websites and you’ll see ‘new-in’ sections filled to the brim with a range of cardigans options, from traditional classic colours to jacquard prints and embellished detailing. What was once a simple button-down serving as a practical layering piece is now a chic staple that can transform your entire outfit, even if you’re currently not venturing beyond your front door. You can now make this knit work twice as hard in your wardrobe – as a classic separate and a standalone star.
I find one of the easiest ways to wear a cardigan is over a pair of blue jeans with a white t-shirt underneath, reminiscent of understated Parisian style. But style stars are finding clever new ways to wear this favourable knit; such as buttoned-up and worn back to front for an exposed back, tucked into trousers or jeans for a slimmed down silhouette, or worn oversized as a boxy dress with a lace bra underneath. The 2021 way to wear a cardigan? That is entirely up to you.
