Can’t be bothered to apply makeup during lockdown? Me either. Well, until recently that is. I haven’t put on a full face of makeup in months now, and I was beginning to wonder if I’d lost the skill of makeup techniques I’d worked hard to master over the years. So I dusted off my makeup bag and began going through my makeup routine and it felt strangely nice, therapeutic even. Whilst I simplified my routine (because I wasn’t actually leaving the house) when I looked in the mirror it made me feel good, a sense of normality momentarily restored.
Makeup has always been a form of support for me, a way to hide my skin texture and flaws. I’ve struggled with acne and hormonal skin texture for years now, over a decade in fact. I thought once I hit my 20’s my breakouts would vanish and I’d magically have supermodel skin overnight – I’ve never been more wrong in my life. But even before lockdown hit back in March, I started to embrace my skin and let it breathe. And it worked wonders.
I’m taking a slightly more minimal approach to makeup (for now anyway). Instead of caking my face in a ton of products, I’m concentrating on the things that work best with my skin and do it justice. I’ll always use a concealer for quick and easy touch-ups and to hide pesky blemishes, and to even out the overall appearance of my skin. I feel more put-together when my eyebrows are groomed, nothing too intense, just a light coating of tinted eyebrow gel and I’m good to go. Bronzer always adds a nice warmth to my skin and makes me look a little more alive, so I typically never skip that (I use bronzer as a blush too – win win). If I’m feeling fancy a dab of highlighter, literally the tiniest bit. And to top it all off I’ll use a nice tinted and moisturising lip gloss, and some trusty setting spray.
Here are some of my favourite products I use for this makeup routine:
– NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer – in Ginger
– Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick – in Golden (used as a spot concealer)
– Milk Makeup Kush Fiber Brow Gel – in Herb
– Glossier Boy Brow – in Clear
– Milk Makeup Matte Bronzer – in Baked
– Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer – in Sunkissed
– e.l.f. Highlighter – in Illuminating
– MAC Strobe Cream – in Goldlite
– Kopari Lip Glossy – in Birthday Suit
– Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb – in Fenty Glow
I’m pretty happy with this simplified routine I’ve come up with. Even better, it takes me a fraction of the time of my previous makeup routine. I’ve always liked makeup, and I’m always going to enjoy the transformative process of putting it on. I have drawers full of makeup, so to have it sitting at home not being put to use feels like a waste a lot of the time. But for now, I’m letting my skin breathe whilst I don’t have anywhere to go to in a hurry. When I do eventually feel the need to venture further than my front door and reconnect with the outside world, this will be my go-to makeup routine.
