If you know me, you know I’m not a vintage shopper at heart. It took me a while to adjust to the idea of wearing something pre-loved or pre-worn, and I’ve never vintage shopped in my hometown of London. When I visited New York I made it my mission to introduce myself to the world of vintage, and I’m so glad I did. When you vintage shop it has a certain feel-good factor, finding a gem you know no-one else will have that’s unique is a definite high.
One of the reasons I’ve fallen head over heels for vintage fashion is the fact that it exists outside of the fast fashion market in a world entirely of its own, it’s unlikely to have been mass-produced and is therefore better for the environment. This is one of the many reasons I’ve joined the vintage bandwagon as the environmental impact of fast fashion is definitely becoming more apparent, recycling and re-wearing clothes has never been more chic. Below are two vintage stores I discovered in NYC, both definitely worth a visit.
Metropolis Vintage is a store in the East Village that sells t-shirts, jackets, shoes and more alongside rare gems such as the Gucci sweater worn by Michael Jackson pictured above (which wasn’t for sale for obvious reasons). This is definitely my kind of store. Lots of cool t-shirts/jumpers influenced by cartoons, movies, and all genres of music you can think of. Their products are hand-picked then put up for sale in their store, think cool authentic pieces at decent prices. I’m not going to lie, I paid more then I thought I would for the two t-shirts I purchased but as soon as I bought them I knew it was the right decision. And whats even better than that? I know no-one else will have them. Both of my purchases are Disney themed; one is black with an old-school Mickey Mouse logo and the other has many Disney characters such as the Tasmanian Devil and Bugs Bunny. Over the years they’ve had some very notable customers such as Selena Gomez, Zoe Kravitz, and Kendall Jenner – and if its good enough for them its good enough for me.
WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND NYC
What Goes Around Comes Around has defined luxury vintage since opening its doors in Soho, NYC in 1993. With stores also now in Beverly Hills, Miami, East Hampton and an outlet in Roslyn Heights their team travels all around the world to hand-source rare and covetable vintage pieces. Now what they sell doesn’t come cheap, this is a luxury vintage store and you can expect to pay hundreds to thousands for one-off pieces you won’t find anywhere else. At least you can be assured that what they sell is authentic; this vintage shopping destination is a hot-spot for influencers, stylists, celebrities and fashion lovers globally. WGACA’s Soho store is immaculate, everything has its place in a carefully curated environment which is incredibly pleasing to the eye. No matter what you’re looking for whether its pieces from the past or something more fashion-forward; What Goes Around Comes Around boasts pieces from YSL, Louis Vuitton, Alaia, Pucci and so much more.
One thing I’ve learnt whilst vintage shopping in New York is that vintage shouldn’t scream vintage. The key to making it work is to mix in high-street or luxury pieces that may currently be ‘on-trend’, just make sure it doesn’t look like you’ve tried too hard. A good tip is that if a vintage piece you’ve fallen head over heels for doesn’t fit the way you’d like or has a button missing, you can always take it to a tailor and get it re-worked.
